AI SEO Tools: GitHub repos

Open-source GitHub repos are a different way to get AI SEO tools: you get the code, not a subscription. Every repo on this page is a public repository, and each one has at least 50 stars on GitHub and recent commits. What you get ranges from a Claude Code skill that audits a page to a self-hosted rank tracker, a crawler, or a small library that writes meta tags into a site you are building.

The first thing to sort out is the kind of repo, because the word covers very different jobs. Skills and MCP servers are built for AI assistants. Claude SEO is a toolkit built as a skill for Claude Code, and Houtini SEO Console is an MCP server that lets Claude run a technical SEO audit. You install them into the assistant you already use and talk to them in plain language, so they suit someone who works inside Claude Code, Cursor or Codex all day.

Self-hosted apps are the second kind. OpenSEO is an open source alternative to Semrush and Ahrefs that you host yourself, and SerpBear is an open source app for tracking where a domain ranks in search. Scouter SEO Crawler and LibreCrawl run on your own server or desktop and replace a paid crawler. These come with a dashboard and a database, so they feel like a normal tool, but you are the one who installs, updates and backs them up.

The third kind is code libraries and plugins, written for developers who are building a site. Laravel Sitemap and next-sitemap generate sitemaps, Spatie Schema.org builds JSON-LD markup in PHP, and Astro SEO adds the tags search engines and social platforms read. A related group generates llms.txt files so AI tools can read a site cleanly, such as astro-llms-md and mkdocs-llmstxt. These do one narrow job inside a framework, and the right one is the one that matches your stack.

AI search visibility trackers are a growing fourth kind. Elmo and OneGlanse follow how ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and other answer engines mention and cite a brand. Compare them on which engines they cover and whether they run on your own keys, since that decides how much setup you take on.

Before you run any repo, weigh a few things that the star count does not tell you. Look at who maintains it and how recently, because a project with one author can go quiet. Read the license, since open source terms differ on whether you can use the code inside client work or a paid product. Check whether it needs a paid data source: a repo such as SearchMirror is built on the DataBlue SERP API, where you bring your own key, and several tools here are powered by DataForSEO, so the code is free but the data it pulls may not be.

Then be honest about the self-hosting work. A command line tool needs a runtime on your machine. A dashboard needs a server, a database and a way to keep it running. A skill needs an assistant that can load it. If you want a finished product with support, a hosted tool will fit better, and the other category pages cover those. If you want control over your data, no seat fees and the ability to change the code, a repo is worth the effort.

Finally, match the repo to your role. A developer who ships sites will get the most from the libraries and framework plugins. A solo marketer who already uses an AI assistant will find skills and MCP servers the quickest way in. An agency with a technical person on staff may prefer a self-hosted crawler or tracker it can run for every client without per-seat costs.

Common questions about GitHub repos

What is the difference between a skill, an MCP server and a self-hosted app?

A skill is a set of instructions an AI assistant loads, like Claude SEO for Claude Code. An MCP server connects the assistant to a data source, like mcp-gsc for Google Search Console. A self-hosted app, such as SerpBear, runs on your own server with its own dashboard and you open it in a browser.

Which GitHub repos work with Claude Code or other AI assistants?

Claude SEO and Agentic SEO Skills are built for Claude Code. SEO Skills for AI Agents works with Claude Code, Cursor, Codex and any agent that reads SKILL.md files. Houtini SEO Console is an MCP server that lets Claude run a technical audit from data stored on your own machine.

Which repos help a developer add SEO to a site they are building?

The libraries and framework plugins suit this best. Astro SEO adds search and social tags to Astro sites, Laravel Sitemap creates sitemaps for Laravel, and Spatie Schema.org generates JSON-LD markup in PHP. Pick the one that matches your framework so it fits your build.

Are there open-source crawlers that replace a paid desktop crawler?

Yes. LibreCrawl is a free desktop crawler offered as an open source alternative to Screaming Frog, and FreeCrawl SEO Tool is a cross-platform desktop crawler with the same aim. Scouter SEO Crawler is the web app version that you run on your own server.

Which repos track visibility in ChatGPT, Perplexity and other AI answers?

Elmo tracks how ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, Grok and Google AI Overviews mention and cite a brand. GEO AEO Tracker follows ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google AI Mode. Gego is an open-source tracker for generative engine optimization.

Do open-source SEO repos always need a paid API key?

No. Some run on their own, like Beaming Bog, a Python SEO crawler. Others call outside data: SearchMirror uses the DataBlue SERP API with your own key, and DataSEO MCP uses Ahrefs free tools as its source. Read the setup notes before you install.
